Perry Bike Yellow Trail

The Perry Lake Bike Trail is located on the west side of Perry Lake, in Perry State Park, half-way between Topeka and Lawrence Kansas. The trail was designed and built specifically for mountain bike enthusiasts. A favorite among advanced skills riders and trail runners, it hosts several competitive events each year including mountain bike, trail running and adventure races. The trail has a very rocky tread, many hills, short steep sections with tight turns, off camber, fast and technical rocky sections. Most of the trail is under a deep canopy of hardwoods.

Event Description:

Participants will be required to navigate to waypoints and challenges to retrieve important artifacts. To acquire these artifacts, an action will have to be performed. Participants will be limited to right of way and public properties unless otherwise stated. If we catch you running through lawns (and our residents will) you will be penalized.

Participants will be issued a map with the waypoints marked. It is up to the participants to decide the best way to complete the course. No cue sheets will be issued. No markings will be placed on course. The course will be open to traffic and citizens. Participants will be required to be within two seconds of each other regardless of transit. If you’re on a team and running you should be able to touch, you will both be in the same boat, and if your cycling you should be able to draft. Choose your exit buddy well. All finishers will receive an award for finishing before cutoff. Team Adventurers will be provided a canoe, paddles, and life vests for the river segment and a map by the race. Solo Adventurers will be provided a map. Orienteer Adventurers will be provided a map. You will be sharing the road during the bike and running portion of the events. Use appropriate caution. This is a “Leave No Trace” event. You bring it, you leave with it. There will be a post-race celebration at the finish area at 9th and Main in Eudora, Kansas will include food from various local vendors, beverages (adult and otherwise) and music. Please plan on staying for the fun after the race – and invite friends, the post-race celebration is open to the public! REQUIRED EQUIPMENT Bicycle Helmet Red flashing light for rear of bike Photo ID Compass for navigation A way to carry 32 ounces of water (the river segment is long and there isn’t anywhere to pull over) A way to carry artifacts back to the finish for scoring (remember frisbees are unwieldy) Whistle Energy bars/food Bug spray/sunscreen Tire pump Repair Tool/flat kit Spare tube Waterproof map case (like a ziploc baggie) Waterproof writing utensil Small dry bag First Aid ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT FOR SOLO ADVENTURERS Solo canoe or Kayak Paddle Life vest A way to secure your gear in DeSoto (can also hand off equipment to a trusted person) BEFORE THE RACE Complete registration and make payment. This is a USARA sanctioned event and your registration fee includes the cost of single event membership to the USARA. Make sure you have all of the required gear with you. DAY OF THE RACE Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. at CPA Park in Eudora. Parking is available in the lot north of the public safety building at 10th and Main. You must check-in and sign USARA waiver prior to participating in the race. Watercraft dropoff begins at 7:00 AM at the Eudora Wakarusa Boat Ramp. Bike drop off will begin at 7:00 a.m. at the Riverfront Park in De Soto, KS. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING YOUR BIKE TO THE DE SOTO RIVERFRONT PARK. Valets will ensure the safety of the bicycles. Gear may be positioned at transitions but it WILL NOT be moved by officials. You bring it, you carry it. Participants have course options for the cycling leg of low to medium traffic pavement and low traffic gravel roads, navigate to your comfort. PRE-RACE BRIEFING FOR ALL CLASSES WILL BE AT 8:30 A.M. IN CPA PARK. The Adventure Race begins at 9:00 a.m. in Eudora. The Orienteering Race begins at 9:05 a.m. in Eudora. The race will end in Eudora at 5 PM for all classes. Awards will be presented at 2:00 PM. The last participants will receive their prizes as soon as they finish or 5PM, whichever is first. EVENT RULES Be a good sport or we’ll disqualify you. Wear your race number at all times. No modifications may be done to boats provided by the Great Kaw Adventure Race. Wear your lifejacket at all times on the river. Wear your helmet at all times when in contact with your bicycle. You are responsible for keeping all required passports, items, or artifacts collected somewhat organized, clean, dry, and conveyed to the scoring official. SCORING Maximum time on course is 8 hours. Your finishing time will be based on when all team members place their documents on the finishing table. If stopped by a train, delays will be adjusted. The team that as completes the most (preferably all) waypoints with the best time (fastest return) will be the first place winner. For every missed or lost checkpoint, 20 minutes will be added to the team’s overall time. You are responsible for the safe return of legible, orderly documents. Undergarment storage of documents is not acceptable and the judges will be severely grossed out. All results will be provided to USARA for national ranking purposes.

Located in Topeka, Kansas, Kaw Valley Bicycle Club was founded in 1971. We are a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote a general interest in bicycling for all types of cyclists—tourists, racers, commuters, and casual riders. The club takes its name from the Kansas or “Kaw” River flowing through Topeka.
