Through the efforts of local residents and friends known as the Mount Mitchell Prairie Guards in partnership with Audubon of Kansas, a historic park has been created that ties Wabaunsee County to this pivotal period in our nation’s past.
Located on a 50-acre hilltop three miles south of Wamego, the park is called the Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Preserve. It is dedicated to Captain William Mitchell and the Beecher Bible and Rifle Colony, The property, part of Captain Mitchell’s farm, was given to the Kansas State Historical Society in 1953 by Mitchell’s son W.I. Mitchell.

Clinton Lake North Shore Blue Trail begins at Corps trailhead on the east end and winds westward along the water. The Blue Trail is the least difficult of the three North Shore Trails with many connections to the White and Red trails. Look for the the timber arch between Mile 5 and 6. The bike skills loop is accessed from the Blue Trail on the far west end. Note that camping is not allowed along the trails but campsites are located nearby in Campground 1 and Campground 3. Cabins are also available in Campground 1.
