Event Description:

Help clear bush honeysuckle from the woods along Shunga Creek. Felker Park is along Gage Blvd adjacent to Shunga Creek. We will continue to clear an area of the woods of the honeysuckle and other invasives to allow the native species to flourish. 2015 makes this our 6th year of working on clearing these woods of invasive plants. Native plants found in these woods are Virginia Waterleaf, Woodland Phlox, Anise root, Wahoo, Chokecherry, and various sedges and grasses. The natives plants are increasing as the invasive plants are removed. The area we will be working is adjacent to the bridge at Gage & Shunga Creek. Parking is at the Tennis Courts off of Gage Blvd. If you can't come right at 6:00, just meet us in the woods.

Not only will we be cutting mature honeysuckle shrubs but there are also plenty of saplings that need to be pulled. Their shallow roots allow easy pulling. Wear boots, leather gloves, long sleeves and pants. Bring a lopper or pruning saw if you plan to cut. If you don't want to cut, you can help drag branches. Shawnee County Parks will be supplying herbicide to treat the cut stumps to ensure the honeysuckle doesn't regrow. Please let Jeff know if you plan to attend. When we finish we will go to a local eatery for supper.

This may not sound like fun but it really is. We will do some botanizing besides working.

What to Bring: Wear boots, leather gloves, long sleeves and pants. Bring a lopper or pruning saw if you plan to cut.
