Event Description:

This field tour will visit an upland oak woodland restoration study being conducted at Marais des Cygnes and La Cygne Wildlife Areas located in southeastern Kansas. The study is a collaborative effort among the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism, the U.S. Forest Service, and the University of Missouri. The study objectives are to determine the differing effects among combinations of thinning and burning treatments on species, fuels, and vegetation structure. Emphasis will be placed on discussing and viewing the different effects of fire and thinning on oaks and their major competitors, particularly sugar maple. Additional tour stops include a recent timber harvest and burns in oak management units.
